The Global Biotech Potato Partnership (GBPP) project is usinggenetic engineering of three late blight resistant genes, referred to 3 R-genestack to provides durable resistance to the disease for existing popularvarieties. The 3 R-gene late blight resistant (LBR) potato is intended todirectly increase crop yields and cut reliance on fungicides by up to 90%,greatly reducing human and environmental health risks while providing aresilient solution to the disease.
The LBR potato achieves inclusive and sustainable agriculture-ledgrowth by improving the lives of smallholder farmers, both women and men, throughimproved crop yields, reduced fungicide input costs, and reduced exposure toharmful chemicals. The project strengthens resilience among people and systemsthrough improved crop management from seed to post-harvest storage. Inaddition, the health benefits of the LBR potato contribute to a well-nourishedpopulation, especially among women and children. The targeted preferredpotatoes are table varieties, a key ingredient in economic daily family mealplans.
