The Institut de recherche Montesquieu () is a research unit that brings together mainly legal historians and political scientists, eager to integrate their work into the broader environment of social sciences. In addition to law and political science, the researchers of the IRM make particular use of resources from history, sociology, literature, anthropology and areal studies for the understanding of past and contemporary legal and political phenomena.

As part of the European project ISTHisFrench, we are recruiting a PhD student in Legal history F/M.

The aim of this research project, led by Professor Xavier Prévost, is to place Renaissance Legal humanism in its European context in order to understand the construction of legal nationalisms hidden behind the expression “French method of teaching law” (mos gallicus jura docendi).

To this end, you will work for three years as part of the team on this five-year project funded by the European Research Council.

Votre mission

The ISTHisFrench project includes three doctoral theses aimed at drafting transnational micro-histories of Legal humanism.

As part of this doctoral contract, the thesis will focus on a book that played a key role in spreading Legal humanism across Europe: the Annotationes in Pandectas by Guillaume Budé (1467-1540). The content of this seminal text remains largely unknown to the academic community today. This research will fill this gap by drawing on the book’s rich editorial history: first published in 1508, it was subsequently supplemented and revised, not to mention its numerous reprints, including those published after the author’s death. The study will also examine how this text was received and the impact it had on legal thought during the Renaissance. The study of material and intellectual circulation on a continental scale, and the focus on the work’s European dimension, will not only enable the writing of a transnational history of Legal humanism, but also allow to examine the element of nationalism hidden behind the expression mos gallicus.

The thesis, entitled “The Annotationes in Pandectas by Guillaume Budé: a transnational micro-history of Legal humanism”, will be co-supervised by Professor Xavier Prévost (University of Bordeaux) and Luigi-Alberto Sanchi (Research director at the CNRS, Paris-Panthéon-Assas University). The thesis must be written in French or English.

You will participate in the activities of the Institut de recherche Montesquieu and also contribute to the organisation of the ISTHisFrench project’s activities. You will represent the project by participating in academic events in France and abroad.

Vos atouts / Vos talents

Holder of a Master’s degree in law or history, you have already written a master’s research dissertation.

• You are autonomous and rigorous in your scientific approach

• You are prepared to work on Latin sources and archival documents

• You are proficient in English at the C1/B2 level in a multicultural and European work context

NB: The doctoral school of law requires a minimum grade of 14/20 in the M2 thesis and a minimum average of 12/20 in the M2. M2’s thesis must be attached to the application. However, if you justify that the defence of your thesis will only take place in September, it and the corresponding notes may be submitted during September, making sure to submit your application on the platform before 26 August.

Gross monthly salary: 2300€
