Topic description
GENERAL CONTEXT : Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy (NVP) are among the most common symptoms affecting women. Symptoms are often mild, without impairment of quality of life.
However, the severity can vary up to incoercible vomiting (hyperemesis gravidarum) in 0.3 to 3.6% of pregnancies. Women affected by NVP would have dietary intakes deficient in macro- and micronutrients, would be hypersensitive to taste / olfactory stimuli, and would also have specific food preferences.
However, it remains unanswered whether taste and olfactory alterations play a role in exacerbating NVP and what is the influence of NVP on taste, olfaction, eating behaviour and intake.
OBJECTIVES AND APPROACHES : The objective of the project is to gain a better understanding of changes in food perception and eating behaviour in women according to their NVP severity.
It is hypothesized that it is possible to offer them adapted meals to reduce discomfort and increase food intake, however, the impact of such meals depends on the women’s characteristics and on the NVP severity.
First, a structured literature review and a quantitative questionnaire distributed to the target population will be used to study dietary behaviour.
Secondly, four meals will be selected during creative sessions with chefs, dieticians, and women with NVP. Thirdly, a feasibility study will be performed to monitor dietary behaviours, changes in taste and olfaction perception, agreeability, intake, and tolerability of the developed meals in women according to their NVP severity.
Finally, the scientific results will be valorised; recommendations will be deployed. We hope to define different types of women in terms of perceptions, food preferences and severity of NVP leading to tailored advice.
MAIN MISSIONS : You are expected to
- Lead the research project and ensure the coordination between the different involved partners.
- Review the existing literature on pregnant women’s perception and food behaviour in relation to the NVP severity.
- Formulate original research hypotheses and co-develop the experimental design.
- Conduct and coordinate quantitative surveys, meals selection, and sensory and consumer evaluations.
- Conduct statistical analyses.
- Write scientific papers targeting top-ranked international journals.
- Attend congresses, workshops, meetings, and media events to disseminate research results.
- Produce and disseminate results via infographics and webinars to practitioners and pregnant women.
